Description

The bridges need your help!

For this event we will be tackling the temporary repair of the 6 Penny Creek Bridge. This bridge has several trees that will need to be removed from around its base and abutments, smaller brush that will need to be cleared, and concrete that needs to be pushed under the abutments where the stream has eroded away the sediment and existing structure. All trees cut around the abutments cannot exist within the creek and the concrete will need to be filled into sandbags before it can be installed. All of these tasks will require coordination with other volunteers and SRG staff members that will be on site during the event.

All this work will require volunteers to walk up and down steep slopes that are potentially slick and uneven, lift and carry logs weighing up to 75lbs, bent over for up to 5 minutes at a time, and communicate while loud equipment is being used in the work proximity (chain saws). Given the proximity of the work in and around the drainage ditch under the bridge and the recent rain in the area, volunteers should be aware of the possibility of mud and wet conditions at the work site. This bridge is not as large as the last bridge volunteers and staff stabilized but it is higher off the creek it goes over so will require more climbing.

Chain saws will be required for some of the work during this event. If a volunteer would like to bring a chain saw that is at their own discretion HOWEVER, there is no guarantee that the tool will be used during the event. All volunteers using a chain saw will be required to wear chain saw chaps and will not be allowed to participate in chain saw use if chaps are not used. ALL VOLUNTEERS WHO WOULD LIKE TO USE A CHAIN SAW ARE REQUIRED TO PROVIDE THEIR OWN CHAIN SAW CHAPS.

Basic tools will be provided but if special equipment is required by a volunteer, it is the responsibility of the volunteer to provide this. Gloves and safety glasses will be provided if needed or wanted. Everyone who intends to participate in the event will be required to fill out the waiver required before the day of the event. If you are not able to fill out the waiver online, some will be provided the day of the event.
